US Property Buyers Gain Easy Access to Portugal with New Direct Flights
For years, travelling from the United States to Portugal meant multiple layovers and long-haul travel headaches. But that’s changing. With new direct flights operating between Los Angeles (LAX) and Lisbon (LIS), as well as a brand-new seasonal non-stop service from Newark (EWR) to Faro (FAO), properties in the Algarve, particularly in the city of Lagos, are more accessible than ever for American travellers, investors, and remote workers.
Direct Flights Open Doors Across the U.S.
The introduction of a non-stop route by TAP Air Portugal between LAX and Lisbon has significantly cut travel time. This connection takes just under 11 hours and runs several times a week, particularly during the spring and summer seasons when demand is high. Meanwhile, for East Coast travellers, United Airlines will operate direct, non-stop seasonal flights from Newark to Faro which started in May, earlier this year (2025). Running four times weekly through late September, this route lands passengers right in the heart of the Algarve, eliminating the need to connect via Lisbon.
If landing in Lisbon from the West Coast, you can:
- Take a short internal flight to Faro (under 1 hour), if arriving in Lisbon,
- Enjoy a comfortable 2.5-hour drive via the A2 and A22 motorways, or
- Hop on a scenic train that travels down the coast to Lagos.
Why Lagos Is Worth the Journey
Lagos, located in the western Algarve, offers a blend of seaside living while having all of the modern conveniences you’d expect coming from the U.S.. It has long been a favourite with European expats, and in recent years, more Americans are buying property here, drawn by the climate and cost of living.
The beaches and marina-front cafes, along with growing digital infrastructure, make Lagos popular, offering a balance between Portuguese tradition and modern living. If you’re arriving from California, New York, or New Jersey, it can now feel close to home… just with better affordability and less stress.
Algarve Real Estate Opportunity on the Rise
As more U.S. travellers explore Portugal thanks to improved flight access, many are staying longer or returning with plans to buy a second home or relocate permanently. Lagos offers a variety of properties, including modern apartments near the marina and contemporary villas in exclusive areas like Porto de Mós. Prices remain much more competitive compared to U.S. real estate, and the cost of living is significantly lower.
At B&P Real Estate, we’ve seen growing interest from clients across the country; including Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, New York, and New Jersey, who are factoring in these direct routes when planning property scouting trips or holiday visits. This trend is mirrored in our Resort Rentals as well.
Your Doorway to a New Life
If you're considering an investment property or a permanent move, these new direct flight options from both coasts make Portugal feel closer than ever.
It’s easier than ever to visit properties in person, explore different neighbourhoods, and experience the Algarve lifestyle before making your next move, especially when you can land right in Faro and be in Lagos in under an hour.
